Lake Titicaca Site of Possible Earth God Human Sacrifice, February 4, 2004

A seven month old child was found dead by Peruvian police by decapitation in Yunguyo at the shores of Lake Titicaca near the Bolivian border, after tips given by villiagers disturbed by the killing. He was found surrounded by flowers and containers of liquor bottles, leading police to the assumption that he may have been killed as a result of a Pre-Columbian human sacrifice ritual meant to appease the Earth God. The position of the murder may confirm this theory; the native peoples of the area consider sacred higher peaks, as well as Lake Titicaca itself, the world's deepest lake, which according to Pre-Colombian myth is where the first human beings sprang from. While anthropologists often come upon unsubstantiated human sacrifice stories, it is more common to hear in the area surrounding Lake Titicaca of llamas buried underground for the purpose of appeasement of agricultural deities.
