U.N. Official Discusses Major Colombian Humanitarian Crisis, February 4, 2004

Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, Kamel Morjane, began a mission to bring attention to the growing Colombian refugee crisis a week ago. Refugees include those escaping armed violence by moving across Colombia's borders into Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama, and also those who are internally displaced. Approximately 2-3 million people have been displaced within Colombia (largely Afro-Colombian and indigenous), while over 300,000 have fled to other countries.
