Scandal-Plagued Peruvian Vice President Resigns, January 30, 2004 Raul Diez Canseco stepped down from his post as First Vice President of Peru in the wake of a series of revalations by the opposition newspaper, Correo, who allege an exceptio of taxes to the family of a young mistress. Canseco eliminated taxes for airport businesses, including one owned by the father of a rumored 26 year old mistress, and allegedly, further seeking to offer her and her family government positions. Raul Diez Canseco in his resignation letter, denied the allegations wholeheartedly, saying that he could better combat them without being weighted by the office of Vice-President. For this very scandal, he previously retired from the post of Trade Minister several months earlier.
