Vladimiro Montesinos, security adviser to former President Alberto Fujimori, began his fifth trial on Tuesday for a charge of parachuting more than 50,000 soviet made assault rifles from Jordan to guerillas, airdropping them over four flights. Prosecutors are seeking a 20 year sentence. The scandal involved with the purchase of arms was a significant factor in the end of the Fujimori regime. Montesinos is serving a sentence of nine years for previous convictions on minor corruption charges.
