Commandos Make Prison Break in Mexico, January 5, 2004

Heavily armed commandos with assault weapons disguised as soldiers raided a prison in Apatzingan in Western Mexico, and freed 25 prisoners in custody, according to Mexican officials. They arrived in six vehicles at 3:30am Apatzingan time, and informed the prison guards they were conducting an inspection. When identification was requested, however, they instead drew their weapons and a firefight began, which killed at least one guard. The prisoners freed are believed to be linked to drug-trafficking gangs. 6 of the 25 freed prisoners have been recaptured; the rest remain at large.
