Ancient Mayan Altar Recovered From Looters, October 30, 2003

An altar, stolen over two years ago from the ruins of the city of Cancun, was recovered from looters. Dr. Arthur A. Demarest of Vanderbilt, who lead excavations at Cancun and assisted in the recovery of the limestone altar, called the limestone altar "a masterpiece of Maya art." The altar, which displays a Mayan king of the late eighth century, is said to offer new insights into the kingdom.
