Colombian Leftist Elected Mayor of Bogota, October 27, 2003

A former Communist and labor union leader was elected mayor of Bogota on Sunday. Luis Eduardo Garzon received 47 percent of the vote in the race for the political position considered second in importance after the president.  His election was seen as a major victory for the Left in Colombia, and an additional defeat for President Uribe, who has been criticized by Garzon for his handling of the FARC.
