Bolivian President Resigns Amidst Protest, October 20, 2003

Bolivian President Sanchez de Lozada resigned on Friday, after a month of protests and violence.  Although the protesters were mostly Indian, organized labor and opposition political groups joined in demanding the resignation of the president, especially after his use of force to control the protesters.  His former vice-president Carlos Mesa was sworn in as president.
