Gang Leader's Murder Leads to Uproar in Haiti, September 27, 2003

The murder of Amiot Metayer, a gang leader who once was loyal to Haitian president Aristide, has resulted in protests that closed schools and public buildings.  Metayer's followers have stated that the government is to blame for his murder.  Metayer's gang wanted the current administration to be replaced by an interim government, new elections to take place and higher wages for state workers, requests which the government rejected.
