Civic Groups Target of Violence in Haiti, July 14, 2003

Partisan violence continues in Haiti, when on Saturday, July 12, 2003, dozens were injured in a march of civil society groups whose members ventured into a seaside shantytown stronghold of President Aristide and his governing Lavalas Family party. The marchers, participating in a series of motorcades called the "Caravan of Hope," were stoned by Aristide partisans as they entered Cite Soleil, a slum of over 500,000 people. Spokespersons for the government called the civil march a miscalculation on the part of the participants.
