Tensions Increase at Colombia-Venezuela Border, April 24, 2003

Following the violence in Colombia during Holy Week, tensions grow concerning the unregulated Colombia-Venezuela border. It is feared that clashes between right wing paramilitaries and leftist guerillas will create a potential war zone if efforts are not increased to maintain it. Presidents Hugo Chávez and Alvaro Uribe will meet in Venezuela this week to discuss the border, as well as other issues considered crucial to the maintenance of friendly relations between the neighboring countries.
