Cuban Hijacking Attempts, April 1, 2003

Tense negotiations occurred during an attempted hijacking of a passenger airline from Cuba to the United States by a man reported to have two grenades on April 1. The man allegedly wanted the plane to be rerouted to the United States, though the plane was forced to land in Havana due to lack of fuel. This most recent hijacking follows a successful attempt on March 19, in which a passenger airline was hijacked by six men wielding knives. The plane was forcibly landed in Key West, Florida, while the US was leading its first strikes in the the war against Iraq. The Cuban government was displeased that bond was set for the first group of hijackers, and fears that such relatively light punishment by the United States government may not be enough to deter subsequent attacks such as this most recent occurence.
