Iran and Argentina at Odds Over 1994 Bombing, March 18, 2003

A Buenos Aires judge has issued arrest warrants for four Iranian diplomats accused of organizing the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in which 85 people were killed and many more were wounded. The attack, which has been called “the worst act of terror in Argentina’s history,” was initially blamed on Muslim extremists connected to the Lebanese organization Hezbollah. New information implicating senior Iranian officials was alleged by a defector from Iran’s intelligence agency. According to these allegations, the Iranian government recruited members of Hezbollah to execute the bombing. The informant also alleged that high ranking Iranian officials were behind the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires in which 29 people were killed. The Iranian foreign ministry denies any responsibility for the attacks and demands an apology from Argentina for the indictments of the four officials who were based at the Iranian Embassy in Buenos Aires at the time of the attacks.
