Absenteeism and Former Rebels Win Out in El Salvador’s Elections, March 17, 2003

As expected, a lower voter turn-out (around 40% of registered voters) in El Salvador dominated the election process on Sunday, March 16th, 2003, yet the party of the former leftist rebels claimed victory for many of the country’s mayorships and some congressional seats. The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, or FMLN, won around 100 of 162 mayorial positions and evened their number of seats in congress with the Nationalist Republican Alliance, ARENA, their conservative former adversaries. The mayorship of San Salvador was included among one of the FMLN’s election victories.
