Arrest of Opposition Leader in Venezuela, February 20, 2003

Venezuelan general strike leader Carlos Fernandez was arrested on February 20, 2003. At least two other opposition leaders are currently being sought, as it appears President Hugo Chávez is attempting to silence dissidents. The arrest follows the unsolved murders of three dissident soldiers and a civilian woman last week. Strike leader Fernandez is being held on charges related to organizing the recent Venezuelan oil strike that nearly destroyed the country's economy and threatened to boot Chávez out of office.
