Vladimiro Montesinos Trial Begins in Peru, February 18, 2003

The corruption trial of Peru's master spy Vladimiro Montesinos began on February 18, 2003. Montesinos, a former lawyer, is known for his previous control over the courts; he is attempting to maintain that control by asserting his right to remain silent, and claiming mental illness. Montesinos, who faces dozens of charges that range from minor offenses, such as abuse of authority, to major offenses, such as drug trafficking and murder, does not admit to the aforementioned serious charges, as he claims that he was carrying out the orders of former president, Alberto Fujimori. Montesinos catalogued many of his illegal meetings in what are being called "Vladi videos"; in fact, one of these videos recording a bribe, caused the fall of the Fujimori regime. Because Montesinos still holds considerable power over officials (in some cases having evidence against them), and because some officials who speak out fear repercussions, many are hesitant to see the trials proceed. Montesinos was apprehended in 2000, when trying to flee Peru after the Fujimori scandal.
