Venezuelan Opposition to Chávez, January 15, 2003

The recent oil strike in Venezuela aims to force President Hugo Chávez to either resign, or to hold early elections so he may be asked to step down. Chávez refuses to compromise on either demand, and has consequently imported temporary oil for Venezuela. The deadlock has proven to be very costly for both Venezuela and the world, as the nation is the world's third largest oil producer. Opponents to Chávez include business and union leaders, oil executives, and some rebel military officers. A six nation agreement, the "group of friends," hopes to peacefully break the deadlock.
