Former Argentine Dictator, General Leopoldo Galtieri Dies, January 12, 2003

Former Argentine dictator, General Leopoldo Galtieri died on January 12, 2003, at the age of 76, from heart failure. General Galtieri is infamous for initiating a war with Great Britain over the Falkland Islands. Galtieri was in power from 1981-1983, and continued the notorious “dirty war” versus left wingers begun in 1976. Under Galtieri’s regime, officially 9,000 leftwingers or dissidents were killed. Human rights sources estimate that number to be closer to 30,000 dead.
