Crash of American Airlines Flight 587, November 15, 2001

The American Airline flight 587 crash in Queens, New York on Monday, November 12, 2001 has sent the Dominican Republic into mourning for over 200 victims, who included family members of Dominican baseball and merengue stars as well as countless Dominican and Dominican-American citizens. With the exception of hurricane-inflicted casualties, the loss of life for Dominicans was the largest from any single event. One small city in the southwest was said to have lost 40 persons in the crash. In spite of the tragedy faced by Dominicans and their community of support, a simultaneous sense of relief surfaced at the news that the crash was due to mechanical reasons rather than terrorism, as it comes two months after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
