Ninety-four Aboard Ecuadorian Plane Crash in Colombia, January 30, 2002

A Boeing 727 taking off from Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport crashed in Colombian territory Monday morning, January 28, 2002. Ecuador's TAME airplane was on its way from Quito to Tulcán, a northern Ecuadorian border town, and then on to Cali, Colombia. Eighty-five passengers, mostly Ecuadorians and Colombians, and nine crewmembers were aboard the plane that lost contact at 10:23 in the morning. Rescue operations from Ecuador and Colombia have been mobilized.
