The Cuban Research Institute cordially invites you to a luncheon featuring a presentation by Dr. Galina Bakhtiarova, Díaz-Ayala Research Fellow, on her recent research "Cuando salí de La Habana: The Habanera Beyond the Caribbean."

Dr. Bakhtiarova is Assistant Professor in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at Western Connecticut State University. She is the recipient of the Díaz-Ayala Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection Travel Grant, sponsored by the Cuban Research Institute and the Libraries at FIU. Dr. Bakhtiarova will present her recent research on the permutations of the habanera from its origins in Cuba in the nineteenth century to its present day popularity outside of the Caribbean region. While on campus, Dr. Bakhtiarova will be using the Díaz-Ayala Collection to trace the association of Sebatian Iradier to Cuba. Irdier is responsible for adding Spanish names to North American Jazz.
