LASER Working Meeting, March 5-7, 2004, February 2004

LASER, the Latin American Southeast Regional Libraries Consortium, will hold a working meeting in Miami at FIU Libraries and the University of Miami Richter Library, from March 5-7, 2004. LASER consists of large academic Latin American libraries in the Southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico, and is one of four regional groups affiliated with SALALM (Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials). LASER's mission is resource sharing and the collaborative collection development of materials on Latin America and the Caribbean.

16 librarians from the LASER libraries will be in attendance. Discussions during the meeting will include the exchange of duplicate materials between libraries, improving access to Latin American microform collections, and potential and existing digital library initiatives. Included on the agenda are also tours of local communities (Little Havana and Little Haiti) to be led by FIU faculty members Dr. Lisandro Perez and Dr. Alex Stepick, in order to showcase Miami as an international city. The working meeting and activities were organized by Catherine Marsicek, who is currently serving as Chair of LASER.

Sponsorship for the meeting is provided by FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center and UF's Center for Latin American Studies, included in the Title VI grant received by the centers. Additional sponsorship will be provided by FIU and UM Libraries.
