The Díaz-Ayala
Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection, donated to FIU Libraries in 2001, will be one of the featured collections at the 5th
CubaNostalgia,
scheduled to take place from May 16 to May 18, 2003 at the Coconut Grove Expo
Center. This year's theme celebrates "100 years of Cuban Music."
Mayra Nemeth, Head of the Sound and Image Resources Department at FIU Libraries, who was instrumental
in securing the donation of the world's largest collection of Cuban music, is coordinating the event for the Libraries.
The Libraries' display, to feature a timeline of Celia Cruz's contributions to Cuban music, will be right at the
entrance to the Expo Center. Interactive components of the exhibit include computers to search the
discography and listening
stations that highlight musicians in the collection.
CubaNostalgia is a trip down
memory lane for many Cubans who live outside the island. It hopes to portray aspects of Cuban
culture and heritage through exhibits of art, memorabilia, music and food. Now in its 5th year, CubaNostalgia
is a celebrated event that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
