Approval Plan for Cuban Books, April 2001

FIU Libraries began an approval plan in April 2001 with Luis Retta Libros to supply the Libraries with recent Cuban imprints. This approval plan will allow the Libraries to not only receive current publications in a timely manner, but also to develop our Cuban collection in a well-rounded and thorough way. Our collection development profile with Luis Retta Libros is to receive recent Cuban imprints of an academic and scholarly nature relating to anthropology, art, economics, geography, history, literature, political science and international relations, religion and sociology.

Luis Retta, working out of Montevideo, Uruguay, is a well-known and well-respected book vendor of Cuban and Uruguayan material. His clients range from large academic institutions (including the Library of Congress), looking to develop a comprehensive collection of Cuban materials, to smaller libraries interested in one or two subject areas.

As Cuba is an important strength within our collection, we anticipate building upon this foundation. FIU Libraries is in the process of developing approval plans with additional Latin American and Caribbean countries. For more information about the Cuban plan or other plans, please contact Catherine Marsicek, Latin American & Caribbean Information Services Librarian, at (305) 348-2228 or marsicek@fiu.edu.
