FIU Libraries Joins ARL Latin Americanist Project, June 2001

Florida International University Libraries is a new member in the Association of Research Libraries Latin Americanist Research Resources Project. FIU Libraries joins over 45 U.S. research libraries and foreign institutions in this cooperative initiative that seeks to improve access to research resources published in Latin America.

The Project has three main components:

  • LAPTOC (Latin American Periodicals Tables of Contents) - A searchable Web database that provides access to the tables of contents of more than 600 journals published in Latin America. Currently, journals from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are best represented, but the project is rapidly expanding to include journals from other countries in Central and South America. FIU will be contributing the tables of contents to selected Colombian journals. As a member, FIU receives expedited interlibrary loan service for any of the articles held by partner institutions.
  • Presidential Messages- A Web database that contains digital images of presidential speeches from Mexico and Argentina from the early 19th century to the present.
  • Distributed Resources - An agreement between participating North American libraries designed to strengthen the collective coverage of books and other resources produced in Latin America. Through the concerted reallocation of library collection budgets, enhanced coverage of "non-core" materials can be better provided. This fiscal year, FIU will reallocate 7% of its Latin American materials budget to purchase Colombian materials.
